Our house has been completely renovated and looks great. Active brothers have been living in the house since August, 2003. Currently there are 50 active brothers, including 14 men that were initiated last fall.

While it is true that our house has undergone a complete renovation, it does not mean that we have covered all of our costs. Our house has a substantial mortgage and we are actively seeking financial support from our alumni in order to pay it down. Once we meet our campaign goal of $1.5 million, the undergraduates will then be able to cover the mortgage through rent dues on an ongoing basis.
After spending $1.2 million in construction costs, our task is to now seek contributions from alumni who have never given to the capital campaign, as well as ask those who have already given to re-commit. It is imperative that we get more alumni involved in the campaign.

Although we were able to secure a mortgage for the house at a good rate, it is crucial we collect more contributions to pay the note down quickly. There is a real sense of urgency with our capital campaign so that we can pay off more of our principle. If we can’t raise enough money, we will have to raise that much more in the future to cover the interest on the loan.

Essentially, we have an owner/tenant relationship with the current members of PiKA. Active members are proud of the physical structure of the house and have taken good care of it since moving in fall of 2003. Each man pays a security deposit used to cover any damage that may occur, and they are held accountable by other chapter members for their actions.

Our PiKA House is an institution that has shaped us and marked us just as our high schools and churches have, but the house does not receive any state or federal funding - only our Alumni Donations. Over the years, we have pledged over 1,500 men into Tau Chapter with about 1100 current alumni. It is our duty as alumni who have benefited in any way from the PiKA experience to give back.

We need to raise more than the construction cost primarily to pay off the existing mortgage. Additional expenses incurred include paying the architectural firm, as well as covering our fundraising costs. Keep in mind that the Tau Chapter Building Corporation is run by alumni volunteers who are committed to keeping our expenses to a minimum. The finances of our chapter have never been managed so soundly.

Do you realize that the Tau Chapter (founded February 11, 1895) has been at UNC as long as our beloved Football and Basketball programs. Each of us are a link in a long chain that stretches back 109 years. This is our institution and ours alone. The men before us built it and preserved it for us - we are obligated by our undergraduate participation to re-build it and preserve it for those that follow us.

Unfortunately, our responsibility does not end with one gift or a series of gifts. Just as our initiation into the bonds of phi phi kappa alpha, giving back is a lifetime commitment. Wherever we are in the chain of Alumni, the men that came before us have sacrificed and given enough to get us to this point. Because we completed a 50 year renovation, you will not be asked to give at this level again. back to top
Yes, you can spread your contribution over 2-3 years. Fill out the pledge card and let us know when you want to be reminded to make your gift. You can also contribute with a one time, lump sum payment.

A portion of the house is designated “educational”, and thus we can designate some large gifts to be tax deductible. Please understand that this option is available only to alumni that are able to contribute gifts of $10,000 or more, and with the consent of the Tau Chapter Building Corporation. Please contact us directly with tax deductibility questions.

Please make a contribution today, or pledge to contribute over the next 3 years. Please get this message to other Brothers of the house. We need to finish our capital campaign by summer of 2004. We are seeking alumni to call their classmates and encourage them to give. Please call Markham Carr at 919-345-4954 to learn how to get involved.

The TCBC is a 501(c)(7) corporation that serves as the legal owner and governing board of our PiKA House. The TCBC is made up of PiKA Alumni just like you that have volunteered their time and effort in addition to their financial pledge to see not only this project to fulfillment, but also the future development of our chapter operations. As a PiKA alumnus, you are a non-voting member of the TCBC and need only to show up to participate. In order to become a voting member, you must contribute financially to the needs of the chapter.

TCBC leadership decided that the best way to finish the capital campaign was to hire a professional fundraiser. Tau alumni Markham Carr (class of 1991) was chosen because of his experience and commitment to seeing the capital campaign to its fruition.

As of January 2004, we have received commitments from approximately 362 men for a total of $930,000. We are confident that we will meet our financial needs by raising a total of $1.5 million. We will be actively soliciting every alumnus who has never contributed, and asking those that have to contribute again. back to top
