PiKAs Unite to Celebrate Traditions and Look to the Future in the first ever Alumni Beat
Dook Banquet. For 68 years the undergraduate chapter has honored the UNC
vs. Dook Football game with the Beat Dook Weekend including an all campus parade
and semi-formal dinner dance. This year, for the first time ever,
TAU Chapter Alumni joined together for a semi-formal reunion dinner to celebrate
the tradition once more.
UNC PiKAs from the classes of 1952 to 1999 gathered in Chapel Hill on November 17th
to energize the Capital Campaign and cheer the Tarheels to victory in the longstanding Beat
Dook football rivalry. Educational Foundation Consultant, Moyer Smith '61 arranged
for game tickets for those that needed them. Following the Tarheel victory over
the Blue Devils, PiKAs and their dates (125 total) headed over to the elegant Carolina Club
for the reunion banquet and dance.
Before being seated for dinner, guests enjoyed cocktails,
hors d'ouerves, and a walk down memory lane with a power point presentation tracing the
history of the UNC PiKAs. Special thanks go to Evan Athanas '92 for donating
the Anheuser-Busch products for the program. PiKAs were honored to host UNC
Head Football Coach John Bunting as the keynote speaker. Coach Bunting's
inspirational talk was just what the PiKAs needed in support of the Capital Campaign.
Although Coach Bunting had a busy schedule of appearances that evening,
he took time to field a number of questions from the group.
Everyone was thrilled with the time and attention Coach Bunting shared with us. We
would also like to thank Moyer Smith '61 and Norwood Teague '88 for arranging our
keynote speaker. Tau Chapter Building Corporation President, Bill Warren
'99 followed Coach Bunting in the program and shared important information about
the state of the Chapter. Other Alumni added poignant comments in support
of the Chapter House Renovation Plans. It was on this night that Eddie
Smith '65 committed $50K to the Capital Campaign.
After an elegant meal of filet mignon and fellowship with old friends, the evening
was just getting started. The Phase Band had the group on its feet and dancing
to classic tunes until late in the evening. As PiKAs work toward the renovation
of the Chapter House, organizers hope that events like this will remind everyone of the strong
bonds of brotherhood and the importance of continuing these traditions for future generations.
Attendees reported that "a great time was had by all. " We hope to continue
the Beat Dook tradition with more Alumni functions in the future.
"Bill Johnson, Bob Powell, Jim Nehlsen, and John Smothers renewing old friendships and reliving old
memories at the 2001 All Alumni Beat Dook Celebration held in Chapel Hill during the Dook football weekend."
